The Red Wolf is one of the two indigenous wolf species in North America. Smaller than the Gray Wolf, the Red Wolf inhabited the wetlands of the southeast. Today they exist only on captivity and in a few wildlife refuges. Human encroachment on their hunting grounds early in century has caused their numbers to drop to 75 breeding pairs.
