The toad’s dull, wrinkled, and bumpy skin immediately distinguishes it from its cousin the frog. The textured skin acts as an effective camouflage and is easily overlooked by its enemies. Toads feed at night and during wet weather. Their eyes are adapted to detect moving objects and therefore, their prey must be moving. Toads have parotid glands that secrete a poisonous substance which is usually effective in discouraging predators. The Houston toad is threatened due to a loss of breeding area.
