The Cape Mountain Zebra is preserved only on a few privately owned lands and is very nearly extinct. This broad-banded species is known for its tenacity and only the wiliest lion will try to attack one alone. To complicate their threatened status, they have a very slow breeding rate. A mare usually has one foal every three years after a gestation of 370 days. These unique creatures are some of nature’s most interesting.
